Parker wears a vest all the time, and the splash page beginning this arc shows him holding his arm over his chest.
By his own words “tore some of his coat out by the roots” makes me think that the feathers never grew back and he has a bald patch or two on his chest.
Children are cruel. We like to say that children have to be taught to hate; but, children are naturally selfish and self-centered. Any parent who has ever had to deal with “MINE!” will attest that some things do have to be taught. Children who are giving, accepting, and inclusive toward others pick that up unconsciously from parents who practice those values without preaching them. Parker had the extreme, but all to common, misfortune of running into the other group of kids. It’s a shame to think of all the people like him who could have grown into greatness had they not been beaten down “into their place” by those who could not rise above their own limitations. It would be nice to see him bloom here.
(Full disclosure, Roxie draws a lot of inspiration from my late business partner, who loved funk of all varieties. So Roxie’s busting out the occasional funk tune is a tribute to her. 🙂 )
Well, some children are naturally born to be kind. I know. I was one. However, after being, figuratively, beaten down for most of my childhood, I grew a bit of a thick skin and now it’s hard to get me to do anything nice for people I barely know.
Believe me, I know what she’s talking about, too. Children are terribly brutal. All you have to do is be, look or act differently and they are on you like hornets. I can guarantee I received more than my fair share of it when I was growing up.
Reminds me of a short story by Roald Dahl, though that one involved a child with a bird feather _coat_ (which helped… well, the story is in a collection called “Henry Sugar”, and it’s worth reading, so I’m not saying a word more)
With the recent shutdown of Project Wonderful, we are currently examining our options for this section. Meanwhile, if you'd like to support the comic...
Now we see why Parker is so body shy. And I don’t blame him, but I’d love to get my hands (and surgical tools) on the ones who did that to him.

I have to agree with Kaeto. Actually by Parker being in that contest and even coming in third would show those bullies who the better fur (avian?) is.
Roxie is slowly becoming the group’s therapist. It’s sorta cute.
If Roxie hadn’t said it, I would have.
The Daz Band is old school…how old is Roxie?

She likes her music funky! 😉

That’s very insightful, Maryalee.. I saw countless examples of that too. I wanna give you a hug as much as Parker ^_^

And now I’m going to be hearing that tune in my head all night. XD
Jeez, that was brutal…
Parker’s coloration does not look all that odd for a peacock.
No, not at all for a peacock. But any peacock is going to be a “proud nail” to the people who hate such things.
Ah, I see. I had been trying to figure his comment about an unusual coat.
Substitute “feathers” for “coat”
Roxie’s got good taste in music.

Reminds me of my youth…
